The pricing page is a contact form
Open alation.com/pricing and the server answers with a temporary redirect to a page titled Start a Conversation. It offers a 30 minute call to discuss priorities, challenges and goals, and asks for name, business email, company, job title and country. There are no tiers, no seat prices and no module list on it. That is a legitimate way to sell an enterprise platform, and it is also the reason a budget owner cannot put a line in next year's plan without first booking time with a rep. The only way around it is the AWS Marketplace listing, which Alation maintains because many enterprises buy software against committed AWS spend.
The AWS floor is 60,000 dollars, not 198,000
Search for Alation pricing and several comparison and review pages still quote a baseline SaaS package of about 198,000 dollars for 12 months, attributed to the AWS listing in 2024. When we opened the listing on September 30, 2026, it carried one dimension, Alation Data Catalog, described as a subscription starting at 60,000.00 dollars for 12 months. The listing shows 4.3 stars from 112 reviews. Treat 60,000 as the lowest figure Alation has put in writing today, and treat the older number as history. Your quote will sit wherever seats, sources and modules push it.
One dimension, sold in units nobody defines
The AWS listing sells the catalog in units under a contract commitment, and its own buyer summary states that the pricing table does not define what a single unit maps to. That makes the 60,000 figure a floor you cannot extrapolate. Double your users, connect twenty more sources or add Data Quality, and nothing on the page tells you what happens to the invoice. Compare that with a meter you can read: our plans count monitored tables, so moving from 50 to 250 tables moves the price from 59.50 to 179.50 dollars a month, and you know that before anyone calls you.
Data Quality is a separate purchase that runs on your compute
Alation Data Quality is documented as a feature customers purchase, available on Alation Cloud Service instances with the new user experience. Its checks execute as pushdown SQL against your source, run from an Airflow based service inside Alation's cloud, so the warehouse credits for every check land on your Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery or Redshift bill, not Alation's. That is sensible engineering, since your data never leaves the warehouse, and it also means the true cost of Alation data quality is three lines: the catalog, the Data Quality feature, and the warehouse compute its checks consume.

Write down which half of Alation you need
Alation sells a catalog, governance workflows and a data quality product. If your problem is that nobody can find or trust the right table, you need the catalog. If your problem is that tables go stale or break before a report, you need monitoring. Name the one that cost you most last quarter.
Count seats by license type before the first call
Alation's documentation names three license types. Creator covers admins, stewards and composers who edit the catalog. Explorer, on Cloud Service only, runs query forms without editing. Viewer reads. Bring those three counts to the call, because they drive the quote more than any other number.
Ask for the Data Quality line and the unit in writing
Request the catalog subscription, the Data Quality feature and any connector charges as separate lines, each with the unit it counts and what changes it at renewal. A single bundled figure with no unit is the one you cannot compare with anything.

What the Alation AWS Marketplace listing actually says
The listing is titled The Alation Data Intelligence Platform. It is a software as a service product billed through the AWS invoice under a 12 month contract. Its pricing table has one row. The dimension reads Alation Data Catalog, and the description reads subscription to Alation Data Catalog starting at 60,000.00 dollars, in the cost per 12 months column. The AWS generated summary on the same page notes that the catalog is sold in units, that the table does not say what a single unit represents, and that buyers should work with the vendor to size the number of units. The vendor refund policy reads that all fees are non-cancellable and non-refundable except as required by law. A private offer route is offered for custom pricing. The overview text says Alation is trusted by nearly 600 organizations and that Alation Cloud Service runs on AWS. Nothing on the listing mentions Data Quality as a separate dimension, so a quote that includes it will come through a private offer, not the public price table.
Creator, Explorer and Viewer, and why seat mix drives the quote
Alation's own documentation describes three levels of user license. The Creator license is assigned to the three admin roles (server, catalog and data source admins), to stewards and to composers, the people who write queries and edit catalog content. The Explorer license exists only on Alation Cloud Service and lets a user search, browse, follow objects, join conversations and run query forms, without creating or editing catalog pages. Viewer is the lightest seat. Alation publishes no rate for any of them. In practice the ratio matters more than the total. A rollout where every analytics engineer needs Creator rights prices very differently from one where twenty stewards curate and five hundred people read. Before the first call, count each group honestly, and ask whether Explorer and Viewer seats are priced per user or bundled in bands.
What Alation Data Quality includes, from the documentation
Alation Data Quality groups checks into monitors that run on a schedule. Check categories cover accuracy, completeness, consistency, reconciliation between a source and a target table, uniqueness, validity, timeliness, custom SQL and standards applied from a central library. DQ Pilot scans the catalog and drafts monitors with tuned checks for a steward to approve, and a Coverage Mode deploys volume, freshness and schema drift monitoring across connected environments. AI check suggestions come from Amazon Bedrock. Results are stored as a time series, incidents can link to Jira, alerts reach Slack and Microsoft Teams, and outbound webhooks fire on check and anomaly state changes. An SDK on PyPI lets engineers run the same governed checks inside Airflow or CI. Monitors can require an author and approver review before they go live, which suits a regulated team and adds a step for everyone else.
Which warehouses Alation Data Quality reaches
The supported sources page lists Amazon Athena, Amazon Redshift, Azure Synapse, Databricks Unity Catalog, Google BigQuery, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, SAP HANA and Snowflake. Oracle 21.3 and later is supported but not enabled by default, and the documentation tells customers who have purchased the Data Quality feature to contact support to turn it on. Every page in that section carries an Alation Cloud Service badge, so a customer managed, on premises Alation deployment is not the place to run it. The breadth is real. SAP HANA, SQL Server and Synapse are sources a warehouse focused monitoring tool like ours does not cover, and if your critical data lives there, that counts for Alation.
The two small settings that change the real bill
First, scheduling. The monitor schedule page offers hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and custom cron cadences, and it also carries a note that the feature is disabled by default and must be enabled by Alation Support. Until it is, monitors run on demand, through the API, or from an external pipeline. Confirm it is included before you plan on hourly freshness checks. Second, compute. Because checks run as pushdown SQL on your source, an hourly check on a large Snowflake table spends warehouse credits every hour. A Snowflake X-Small warehouse consumes one credit per hour, billed per second after a 60 second minimum each time it resumes, so dozens of small checks spread across the day can keep a warehouse waking up. Group checks into shared schedules and put them on a warehouse that is already running.
How the Alation floor compares with a published monitoring price
Put the numbers side by side and the gap is structural rather than competitive. The Alation AWS floor of 60,000 dollars a year works out to 5,000 dollars a month before seats, modules or services are sized. DataObservability Scale, with 1,500 tables, column-level lineage, SSO and an audit log, costs 5,754 dollars a year billed yearly. Team, with 250 tables and ML anomaly detection, costs 2,154 a year. Starter, with 50 tables, costs 714. The comparison is only fair for one job. Alation buys a catalog, glossary, stewardship, governance workflows and, for an extra fee, data quality across more than 120 connectors. We buy one thing: learned freshness, volume, schema and distribution monitoring on Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks and Redshift, with lineage and alert routing. If monitoring is the problem, you do not need to fund a catalog to solve it.
When Alation is the right purchase, stated plainly
Alation earns its price when the deliverable is adoption of trusted data across a large organization. Its behavioral analysis ranks search results by how people actually query tables, its stewardship and curation workflows suit a formal governance team, and its data quality scores flow into lineage views, data product pages and critical data element mappings, so a failed check lowers trust signals where business users will see them. For a regulated enterprise that already runs Alation as its catalog, adding the Data Quality feature is often cheaper than a second vendor, because the metadata, owners and lineage already exist. Where a flat monitor wins is a lean data team with a cloud warehouse, a dbt project and a real incident problem this quarter, which needs coverage on every table by this afternoon rather than a governance program.
